Apple MacBook Air MC969LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop Review

Forget the tech industry’s latest wave of patent suits and countersuits; everybody knows Apple is the innovator. They own the technology space. Their competitors just try to keep up. A company just as deft at marketing as they are at design, Apple has mastered the art of the product launch.

Of course, Apple customers are more like fans that vountarily spread buzz about the brand. It’s no different with the Apple MacBook Air MC969LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop. Recently released, with many retailers at the mall near you already sold out, the audience for the new Macbook Air is just gearing up — though the question is: will the feeding frenzy be justified?

The Pros

Light!

The Pros — or reasons why you should own one — are substantial, beginning with its portability. Macbook Air’s 11.6 inch wafer thin build makes the last MacBook model look embarrasingly clunky in comparison. There’s nothing worse than slinging a heavy laptop over your shoulder.

With its AC adapter, the Macbook Air weighs 2.38 pounds, making a much better argument for being slid into your bag before you leave the house. For many, this will be the Macbook Air’s most attractive feature. But if the ease of transporting it isn’t a game-changer, consider the full-sized backlit keyboard that relieves you of having to hunt for keys when you’re working in the dark. Then there’s OS X Lion. A vast improvement over Mac OS X 10.6, it offers tighter security against malware.

Cloud for Apple!

AirDrop enables wireless file transfers and Wi-Fi. Lion stores all your content in one place. The desktop is highly touch sensitive and simple to navigate. Last but not least, there’s the iCloud. More user-friendly than Google or Amazon’s cloud-based media service, Apple iCloud lets you instantly scan a user’s library and make copies.

and the Cons

So why shouldn’t you buy the Apple MacBook Air MC969LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop? There are some, though not so many cons. One is that it has two USB ports when other laptop brands on the market such as Lenovo, have three. It doesn’t have an SD slot. (The 13 inch, however, does.)

MBA (Mac Book Air) for others color? Still a dream

The crazy color options Mac fans were hoping for, didn’t materialize. Not to stoke the melodrama, but they’re only available in gray. Another gripe, if you want an optical drive, unfortunately, you have to buy one since it’s not included. The MacBook Air’s 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 is an Ultra-Low Voltage (ULV) processor, one aspect of this laptop that’s definitely not cutting edge.

Battery life? Well…

Besides its lackluster running performance, at five hours max, the battery life is too short. Priced anywhere from $1100 to $1400, there are those who grumble that it could be cheaper. Always more expensive than PC’s, the Mac has never, however, been about affordability.

Who should get it?

All that said, the Apple MacBook Air MC969LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop is a must-have for students — especially those taking graphic design and visual arts related courses. Not only will they appreciate how easily it fits into crowded bookbags but it’s light as a feather mobility as well as ultra-clean resolution.

Just because it’s compact, doesn’t make it a toy. The Macbook Air can be used for word processing as well as to access the internet to send email and do searches. You don’t have to be a student either, to enjoy these perks. If you’re a remote worker who uses the local cafe as an office, this is the perfect tool for you too.

and My 2 cents

I’m always grateful that Apple exists. I’m not super design conscious in general, but I do have an aversion to the tacky look and feel of garden variety consumer electronics. Macs are sort of the Volkswagon Bugs of computers. They’re ultra modern looking and fun — and they stand out. Oh, and for the record, the new Macbook Air is more of a sexy silver than dull gray. So, though I’m not a gadget head, nor am I particularly enamored of shopping, I’m getting one. I spend a lot of time online every day I might as well do it in style.
